HIDI - HOW I DO IT - METAL SPINNING
This is a how I spin copper discs to form bowls for enamelling or further forming using
hammers or whatever moves metal.
Metal Spinning Copper Bowls
Copper squares cut from sheet copper
bought from local sheet metal shop.
Squares marked corner to corner to
find the center.
Using compass and marker circles
are marked on copper squares.
Cutting circles out of square with
shear cutter.
Almost done.
Cut discs.
Little wood lathe converted for
metal spinning.
Lathe showing maple form to spin
metal over.
Copper disc mounted in lathe ready
for spinning.
Still mounted and waiting.
Wax is applied to face of disc and disc is
set to the form.
Continuing to spin
Getting there.

Just a bit more.
Smoothing with flat side of tool.
Spinning is finished.
"Sanding" piece with course 'scrubbie'.

Finished copper is hot
Set on anvil to cool off.
Sanding down top of bowl.

Done - ready for enamelling or
extra forming with hammers.
