Where is Flax Metal Arts Studio:

Flax is a home based metal arts studio located in rural Saltair between Ladysmith and Chemainus in the wonderful Cowichan [the warm land] Valley of Vancouver Island off the west coast of British Columbia, Canada.

Who is Flax Metal Arts Studio:

Flax Metal Arts Studio is me, Lorne Flach, who from my home based studio, I have, since 1992, been fortunate enough to be able to pursue my interest in working with metals to fashion images and objects based primarily on the landscape and natural world that surrounds us. Although there is great interest in the natural world the images of the ancients also hold a fascination, from which comes the interest in knotwork and labyrinths as developed by the ancients.

The Studio:

Flax Metal Arts Studio is equipped to handle most aspects of metal design and production from fabrication to casting with equipment capable of handling multiple reproductions of smaller scale metal pieces. As much as possible all pieces are produced 'in house' with my own designs and effort to maintain a level of quality that suits my fussy nature.

Some History:

Native to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, I have had a long time interest in art with particular emphasis on drawing and graphics. I worked in this area for may years following training at SAIT [Southern Alberta Institute of Technology] in Graphic Arts and at the Alberta College of Art in Printmaking.
I first became interested in jewellery and metalworking as a medium which could combine graphic design with a three dimensional format at the Red Deer College's Series Summer Program. I found the medium intriguing and continued to study for the following three years at Red Deer before returning to the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, Alberta for a more comprehensive exposure to jewellery and metalworking as an art form [thank you [or curse you] Jim Robson].
Since leaving the Graphics industry in 1992 and relocating to Vancouver Island I have three times been honoured with awards for work entered in the prestigious Cowichan Valley Arts Council Exhibition. I have shown and sold my work at juried shows throughout Western Canada.

A Write Up:

"Long time Edmonton Graphic Artist, Lorne Flach, brings years of training and experience in two dimensional graphics to his unique three dimensional forms.
Lorne's pieces reflect his years of formal training and experience through sophisticated design, attention to detail, superb craftsmanship and creative manipulation of the medium. Surface embellishment remains an appropriate adjunct to his intriguing and unique forms creating an overall impression of classic proportion and elegance.
With this art form Lorne is afforded a special opportunity to share his own sense of order, beauty and involvement." [thank you Lois]
